Deciding on a Floor for your House
Published by julia | Filed under Buyer / Seller Tips, Miscellaneous, Real Estate, Shout Outs, Uncategorized
Installation of sheet vinyl flooring is fast and easy. Vinyl is often the most economical flooring choice.
When re-doing a room, how do you decide what kind of floor to put in? There are four main choices to consider: carpet, tile, wood and vinyl. Here are the questions you need to ask yourself as you’re considering flooring:
- Do you need a flooring that is quiet? Or do you have toddlers who are just learning to walk, who need a soft landing when they fall? Perhaps you are in a situation where the subflooring has obvious defects. The choice for this situation is carpeting. Carpet absorbs sound and covers those spots on the subfloor that you don’t want others to see.
- Is dust or bacteria a concern for you? A wood floor is a good option, as they tend to not harbor dust or bacteria. Plus there is just a natural beauty that wood offers to the room. Incidentally, if you like the beauty of wood but can’t quite afford it, there are some simulated wood offerings, such as Pergo, that look like wood but are made of synthetic materials.
- Is the room a place where water and grime collect. Is it a place where there are lots of spills? We’re thinking primarily of kitchens and bathrooms here. Vinyl, which is easily cleaned and resists damage from falling objects, is the obvious choice here. Vinyl also has the advantage of being perhaps the easiest floor product to install…usually just peel-and-stick.
- Do you have a kitchen that needs new floor, but you want something a bit more rugged than vinyl? Then tile, which is rugged, hard, and functional, is the best choice. Because it’s non-porous, tile does a good job at withstanding moisture, and is thus a good choice for the bath or kitchen.
