Three Reasons to Postpone Buying a Home

Published by julia | Filed under Buyer / Seller Tips, Miscellaneous, Real Estate, Shout Outs, Uncategorized

There are quite a few reasons to buy a home in a real estate market where interest rates are low and the price of a home is even lower. Unfortunately, your life may not be in the perfect shape to enter into a long term agreement like a mortgage payment. Three major reasons to postpone buying a home include length of time in a given area, security of a job and marital status.

How Long Have You Lived There?

It is important to take into account the length of time you have lived in an area and the number of times you have moved over the years. If you are not settled in the current place of residence, buying a home may not be the best choice. While the market is prime for buyers, it is not prime for sellers. This means a simple change of mind about living in an area long term could prove devastating for your credit report if the home falls into foreclosure after a move.

How Long Have You Worked There?

Job security can mean the difference in being able to pay the mortgage on a home and not being able to pay the mortgage. If you moved to an area with a new job lined up, give yourself some time at that job before jumping into a new mortgage. Job loss is one of the number one reasons for homes falling into foreclosure.

How Are Things At Home?

The status of a marriage may not seem like a reason to buy a home or not buy a home, but that status can mean the world when the home is owned by both parties. If the marital status is on the rocks, buying a home should be put off for a while.

The trouble lies, not in the possibility of divorce, but in the liquidation of the property. If the home cannot be sold, both parties will be responsible for the home mortgage payment. If one party is not worried about their credit report, the other may have to suffer the consequences of miss payments or a foreclosed home if they cannot afford the home on their own.

Buying a home is a major choice in life and when the time comes, all aspects of life need to be perfect in order for the home purchase to be a happy one. Making sure you love the area you live in, love the job you have and love the marriage you have entered can help to prevent future mortgage problems.
