Remodelling a House

Published by julia | Filed under Buyer / Seller Tips, Listings, Miscellaneous, Real Estate

Many people seek to keep up with the Jones’.  Other’s simply fall behind and stay behind.  While both statues of life are good in themselves, when looking to sell a home, remember, simplicity often works best.  While some remodeling may be required for a home to sell at a good rate, for most homes, remodeling to sell is not worth as much as one would have hoped.

If a family is the Jones’ in the little rhyme, their home may not sell too fast.  This is because it simply may be too expensive for the neighborhood.  It is often the best house in the neighborhood that has a hard time selling because of its value.  There are also the higher taxes that people look at in this type of a home.  The pool and deck are often taxed, as is the garage and shed.  All of this adds up to a very expensive home.

If a family is just barely or not quite keeping up with the Jones’, their home may sell better.  This family may not have everything that the Jones’ do, but they are also not the cheapest house on the block.  This puts them in the middle of the road with the best chance to sell the home.  Sure, they may need new cabinets or something small like that, but they will not need too much.

The family that fell well behind the Jones’ may also have a difficult time selling.  While the worse house on the block is known to sell cheaper than all the others, it can still be priced too high for the remodeling needed to get it up to par with the neighbors.  While the family may be tempted to do the remodeling, excessive remodeling may drive the price up too much for it to sell in that neighborhood.
