Decorating Blunders

You can easily identify a house that has been and has not been professionally decorated and even it have been you can still see at least a few decorating flaws. You should not be surprised really; there are so many rules when it comes to interior decorating and even professional slip up every now and then.

Helping you to prevent in creating the same mistakes, read these rules to avoid decorating no, no’s. Just because most people make mistakes does not give you reason why you have to.

Blunder #1 – Using a rug that is too small is not a good idea. Remember that all furniture should be positioned on the rug. This is a typical decorating error. If this is not possible, make sure that at least the front legs of bigger furniture are on the rug with the back two need not be. If it is a smaller piece, all legs must be inside the rug.

Blunder #2 – Decide on the paint color first. Having thousands of colors to choose from and that it can easily be changed; doing such can save you money. Select your most high-priced piece then decorate around them.

Blunder #3 – Never chandeliers too high. Maximize the light to be distributed in the room not the ceiling.

Blunder #4 – Paintings or artworks must be hung on eye-level to be appreciated even more but obviously it varies from person to person. But if you are asking me, I still prefer placing it on low rather than high.

Blunder #5 – Avoid using curtains and drapes that are too short because the wall looks truncated and shorter than it is. Make sure that they are long and puddle a bit.

Blunder #6 – Throw pillows are a good way of accentuating specific areas of your house but refrain from using too many to the point that you need to move them all of the couch or bed before you sit or lie down. When you see decorations such as that in a store, does not always mean it will look good in your home.

Blunder #7 – Do not create a theme room since they may look old and out-fashioned very easily, then after you are stuck in spending more money replacing items that does not interest any more. Rather, add items of the theme that you prefer into a regular room.

Blunder #8 – Choose comfort over style. When an item looks great does not mean it is comfortable to sit in or to lie into. Think how you are going to use a piece before wanting to buy it.

Blunder #9 – Do not place or push all your decorative furniture against the wall. There are times that the room size can make this hard. Pull some furniture away from the walls to create a much more personal feeling. This applies specifically to living and family rooms.

Blunder #10 – Do not depend on overhead lighting. Though, it is good to have but it also does not offer enough lighting, not flattering at all. Instead use table lamps and floor lamps, make sure to mix it, as this will provide more light as well and the area looks much better.
