Fairfax County — Second Richest County — Topped Northern Virginia Home Sales in January

Fairfax County, the second richest county in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau’s median household income survey for 2010, posted the biggest home sales among counties in Northern Virginia in January 2012. A total of 655 homes in Fairfax County were sold, nearly half of all homes sold in Northern Virginia in January. It also marked an increase from sales in January 2011.
Prince William County, the second-ranking county in sales in the Northern Virginia area, sold 331 homes – around half of Fairfax County home sales.

In the entire Mid-Atlantic region, Fairfax County also posted the best sales performance in January. It sold 125 more homes than second-ranking Montgomery which sold 530 homes and 129 more homes than third-ranking Prince George’s which sold 526 homes.

Based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s surveys of median household income in 2009 and 2010, Fairfax County is the second richest county in the U.S. The county’s median income in 2010 was $103,010 and its median income in 2009 was $104,259, in both years second only to Loudoun County, another county in Northern Virginia. Arlington County completes the trio of Northern Virginia counties in the list of the five richest counties in the country. In 2010, the median household incomes in Loudoun County and Arlington County were $119,540 and $94,986, respectively.

In January 2012, the median price for homes sold in Fairfax County was $367,500, the third highest among counties in Northern Virginia and the sixth highest median price among counties and cities in the Mid-Atlantic region. The January median price marked a 2.08-percent increase from the median price in January 2011, although it was lower by five percent than the December 2011 median price.
